You are a farmer in the year 300. You have just moved to the area that will some day become Casa Grande, Arizona. The soil there is great for farming cotton which is what you know how to grow the best. Unfortunately, there isn’t much water in the area. Remember, it is the year 300 and you don’t have wells or pipes yet to get water to your land. Trains and cars haven’t been invented either. It is also a hot place that doesn’t get much rain.

You heard that there is a river, called the Gila River, about 15 miles north of you. You learn that this is the closest source of water to your farm. You must figure out how you will get the water to your cotton fields so that they will grow.
